Hoshinjutsu

Belts are not of singular importance in Hoshin. They are reflections of accomplishments and knowledge, and are based on the godai of ninpo as well as the chakra of esoteric yoga. The system is American and taught in English. The ranks are similar to the Japanese with colored belts representing kyu grades, with stars showing divisions of knowledge within the grades, and a black belt with stripes or stars representing levels of dan grading. The circular patch indicates a ryu member. Senior instructors may wear a blue gi top. Training DVD's of the core techniques for each belt level are available for purchase. Specialty training is available from the senior instructors (Yondan or Godan) upon request.

To achieve a belt, a student must pass a written and verbal test as well as demonstrate physical mastery of the associated skills and techniques. Each belt requires a higher level of competence and subtlety.

The WHITE BELT symbolizes the first rank of the student. It is a belt of transition indicating willingness to learn. While in the probationary period the student is not required to wear a dogi or badge of the hoshinroshiryu. The white belt indicates that the student has mastered dojo conduct and that the sensei has accepted the student into the hoshin system. The student will know how to fall, understand the safety signals, and will begin study of basic kicks, blows, throws, holds, and locks.

The RED BELT indicates the student has demonstrated competency in the entire red belt syllabus; is able to teach white belt basics; understands basic physiology, first aid and general principles of combat; and demonstrates basic knowledge of breathing, massage, and meditation. The holder of the red belt clearly understands the value of stillness.

The ORANGE BELT indicates the student has mastered the concepts of the red belt package concerning personal security. The student now works on strategic body placement, defensive maneuvering, emotional control, and fundamental breath techniques. The orange belt is expected to lead the class in exercise when asked by the senior instructor and will carry out kohai duties as relative to his or her status.

The YELLOW BELT indicates mastery of the defensive techniques. The student now engages in depth studies of the masters, strategy, tactics, reading of intention, offensive maneuvering, and attack combinations. The yellow belt is also concerned with learning advanced energy and meditation techniques and mastery of at least two weapons. Yellow belts must walk fire to receive this belt.

The GREEN BELT is considered an assistant instructor and considered sempai. The student has knowledge of first aid, TCM, advanced massage techniques, and energy skills. They may act directly in the name of the ranking instructor. Training at this level is concerned with teaching skills to others, analyzing and penetrating other martial arts systems, advanced anatomical techniques, subtle energy, and unorthodox weapons.

The BLACK BELT or shodan is awarded to students who have demonstrated knowledge and teaching ability. They may nominate for commendations during award ceremonies and testing. The black belt studies interpersonal psychology and communication skills, combat psychology, use of terrain, humor, compassion, camouflage, deception, chi transfer, and attack & defense with weapons. A black belt in hoshin demonstrates mastery of meditation, knows over one hundred throws and joint locking techniques, is comfortable with an array of weapons -- both traditional and modern, has accomplished the lesser kan and li, and is knowledgeable of roshi healing traditions. He or she is a beginner in the teaching traditions but technically sound as a practitioner.
